Here’s the latest from Maino – “All The Above” featuring T-Pain. When you hear it on the radio, turn it up. Feels good!

I fuckin LOVE this song. And yeah, it’s like that. Good message, and the best hook T-Pain has done so far IMO. Enjoy!! Go Maino Go!

Dujeous “Break Bread” Video

March 12th, 2009 |

New York’s consummate Hip Hop band Dujeous debuted their new video this week for “Break Bread” and it’s pretty fly. I love the visuals, and for some reason that loaf of french bread makes me giggle. All I know is that the next time you guys have a house party, I need to be there!

Donnie McClurkin “Wait on the Lord” f/ Karen Clark Sheard

March 4th, 2009 |

Anyone who knows me well knows that, despite my penchant for swearing like a sailor and my love of some of the dirtiest music on the face of the planet, I actually really love Gospel music. Aside from newborn babies and innocent animals, Gospel music is the only thing that really makes me feel close to God on so many levels. One of my absolute favorite artists is Donnie McClurkin, and he’s back in action with “Wait on the Lord” featuring Karen Clark Sheard. I get tears in my eyes every time I hear this man sing. Please enjoy!

Special thanks to Elkin at Think Tank for the song too!

Role Models – Close to Home?

March 1st, 2009 |

The other day I got the Role Models movie dvd (officially due out March 10), and was extra excited to watch it since it seems like I have zero plus zero zero time to get out to the movies these days. I’d seen the clips of it, and the movie delivered everything I expected in terms of comedic value.

What struck me the most, however, was how these two guys Wheeler (played by Sean William Scott aka Stifler) and Danny (played by the still-so-handsome Paul Rudd, who also co-wrote) are kind of typical of the crappy role models that kids have these days.

Every celebrity says that they don’t want to be a role model, but they are, whether they like it or not. So many parents say they want good role models for their kids, but how many really play the part themselves? I know personally that for most of my life, I was definitely not any kind of role model for a child. I wasn’t the worst of the worst by any means, but I wouldn’t have wanted my kid (if I had one) taking notes from the younger me.

Lord knows there are a lot of Wheeler’s and Danny’s in the world, but there are also a lot Ronnie’s – the snarky, extremely smart pre-teen who terrorizes his mentor in the movie. The actor Bobb’e J. Thompson nails the part, and he’s very well suited for dialogue well beyond his years. He’s done a number of sitcom appearances and voice-over work for animated films since 2004, but it was his standout role in Outkast’s film Idlewild that proved he has a big career ahead of him. I don’t think he’ll be limited to comedy either. I’m a fan!

Back to the point though. Kids like the character Ronnie definitely scare me off from ever wanting to be a mentor. Babysitting is cool – that few random hours can be cute – but what happens when the tantrums kick in? This probably makes me the worst adult ever, but I just can’t imagine squaring off against a 10-year-old over what kind of ice cream they want. And what am I supposed to say when they really have a problem, and I can’t even manage my own problems sometimes? And with the amount of technology and information available these days, there are probably 11-year-olds smarter than I am… I’m petrified!

I guess I’m being silly, but I know I can’t be the only person with mentor-phobia, especially when it comes to someone else’s kid.

Have you ever mentored a child? Did you think you made a good role model? Have you ever felt intimidated by the same kid you’re supposed to be the “big brother” or “big sister” to?

While you’re thinking on that, do plan on getting Role Models if you want a good movie you can watch anytime you need a good laugh at the misery of being a mentor.
